Print Email

Working from home has been well accepted after COVID-19 pandemic. Although, thanks to vaccination, we are getting back to normal, there are many companies adopting this operation model and will continue to have part of their team working from home.

IP-PBX and VoIP systems made it possible to simply extend the phone system over the internet, but security remains a major challenge. CooVox-U30 IP-PBX has been our hot selling model and many of our partners and resellers have been asking for best practice to allow the employees to use the office phone system from home or on the road when using CooVox-U30. (Click here to find out more about CooVox-U30)

In this article we propose two solutions and discuss pros and cons of either one.

Option 1: Using Sangoma SBC

Session Border Controllers (SBC) are security appliances to secure your phone system and let the remote users connect to your phone system. SBC Appliances are available in multiple capacity range from 5 to 4000 concurrent calls which suit any project sizing from SME to the enterprise and telco size. Besides the SBC you will need to have a public IP from your internet service provider. This is because we need to set a domain for remote users and let them access the phone system through the internet.

Advantages:

  • one time investment on SBC

Disadvantages:

  • Usually having Public IP is associated with additional cost on internet service
  • Requires technical knowledge or need to have 3rd party support to install and maintain the SBC

Option 2: Subscribe to out SIP Proxy Server Service

Our CooVox-U30 is a tiny yet powerful IP-PBX. With the latest firmware we have the support of our SIP Proxy service integrated with the PBX and ready to be enabled with few clicks.

What is SIP Proxy Server

“A proxy server that allows SIP-based telephony packets to traverse the network's firewall. The SIP proxy takes over call control and provides address translation in order to direct calls to the appropriate phones within the network. Deployed in companies with many SIP phones, a SIP proxy offers a very comprehensive solution for enterprises. For example, it supports authentication, encryption, telecommuters and can even serve as backup for the PBX.”

In simple words, SIP proxy server works as a middleman to connect the remote users to the core IP-PBX without compromising the security of your network. Infact using SIP proxy server is a proven method to enhance the VoIP system security and allows easy remote working.
